TRIO Programs

TRIO is a set of federally-funded programs that provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds with the support they need to graduate with a college degree.


Through TRIO, students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers to higher education and are empowered to achieve personal and academic success. 

Who are TRIO Students?

  • First-generation college students (neither parent has a Bachelor's Degree) and/or
  • Students who meet low-income qualifications (See Federal TRIO Low-Income Levels Chart)

TRIO Programs

San Juan College has 4 TRIO programs that empower students to achieve personal and academic success. 

  • Student Support Services (SSS) - Motivates academic success for eligible students studying any major.
  • SSS STEM-H - Motivates academic success for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Health Science students.
  • Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) - Assists eligible adults and youth with college admissions and financial aid that will set you on the path to your future career.
  • Upward Bound - Provides academic support to high school students so they successfully complete high school, enroll in college, and obtain a college degree. 

TRIO History

Since 1965, TRIO programs have helped low-income and first-generation students access higher education and complete a college degree. TRIO began with only three programs, has grown to 8 programs, and serves students at approximately 3,000 sites across the US.
